What is ex-Yupress?
ex-Yupress is a group of volunteers. We are a non-profit, fiercely independent outfit. We do not get funding from anyone and all the work is done on a purely voluntary basis.Who is ex-Yupress?
ex-Yupress was started in 1995 by Marko Kocic, who still remains the major contributor and the site editor. Marko is originally from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, or Serbian ethnic background. Over the years, a number of individuals have contributed as volunteers to these pages. Their contributions are acknowledged wherever appropriate. Why are you doing this?
Discrepancy between the way the region is reported in the Western press and the way locals see it and write about it can be jarring. Ex-Yupress strives to be an "insider" source about the events in the former Yugoslavia, as seen by the local journalists, activists and ordinary persons. Thus, instead of relying on labels ("pro-Western", "democrat", "nationalist") we give our readers a chance to find out who and what hides behind these labels: are they deserved or not? Along the way we also try to inform about the media from the region and the troubles they encounter. Why does ex-Yupress carry articles from the pro-government media?
Most Balkans oriented sources ignore or avoid "unreliable" media. ex-Yupress feels that without a way to independently verify claims made by the local media we cannot decide for our readers which media outlets are and which aren't reliable. Thus we choose to present as inclusive as possible picture of the local media scene. Also, many Western observers have a very difficult time understanding the effectiveness of the pro-government (or nationalist) propaganda in the local sources and the vitriolic character of the local discourse. Furthermore, ex-Yupress hopes that the articles presented in these pages will give our readers a better understanding of how mistakes in the Western policy provide fodder for effective anti-Western propaganda in "patriotic" media outlets. Can I help?
By all means! There are a couple of things you can do:
