Drnis Incident

by Goranka Juresko

Vjesnik, Zagreb, Croatia, September 1 1997

Last week, a religious holiday of Our Lady was celebrated at the Drnis [Serb] Orthodox church and on that occasion an incident occurred. According to the statement released by the Police Chief for the Sibenik-Knin county, Drago Matic, after the end of a service celebrated in the Orthodox church several inhabitants of Drnis hurled abuse at the citizens of Serb nationality and the Orthodox priest. It was announced that those responsible for the incident would be prosecuted.

The official investigation will tell more about the cause and reasons for the incident but, according to the already available information, it seems that some do not care about coexistence but want to cause trouble. Namely, according to the statement by the local Drnis authorities some of the gathered Serb believers who do not live in Drnis but had arrived with priest Karajovic provoked the [Croat] populace. The inhabitants of Drnis reacted and the incident could not be avoided.

Yet again, it was confirmed that there are many hidden emotions and bad intentions in the relations among people, and that these cannot be influenced by political decisions. Because of that it is necessary to be cautious and prepared for various clashes and problems as well as for the fact that there will always be those who do not care about peace, especially if they don't live in the region in which they provoke an incident. Namely, about 50 Serbs who had escaped after the "Storm" have returned to Drnis and live without problems with their neighbors Croats. This was confirmed by the local authorities in Drnis. However, just a little "fire" added to the still fresh war wounds can cause tension and irreparable harm for everyone.

As Sibenik Bishop Ante Ivas said, in such incidents all participants must be condemned, but they can be avoided by timely cooperation with the civil and even ecclesiastical authorities of the Croatian state. In the Drnis incident that obviously didn't happen and the consequences were unavoidable.

Still, it is also true that statements such as that by mitropolit [Serb Orthodox church title] Jovan Pavlovic that "[Serbs] shouldn't give up those territories which have been Serb for centuries" do not help overcome difficulties in the territories to which Serbs population is returning. Only by toning down the acts in already complicated and highly emotional situation can we expect tolerant coexistence which is in everyone's interest.
