Ambassador Petritsch expressed readiness of the European Union to help deal with the consequences of such situation. He commended the constructive position of Montenegro on behalf of the EU, and promised significant aid in the post conflict period.
President Djukanovic thanked for the support and emphasized that the greatest assistance European Union could provide for Montenegro and FRY at this moment would be to stop NATO bombing and renew the negotiating process about Kosovo. President Djukanovic also expressed his hope that the International Community, within the scope of the solution for the Kosovo problem would find a way to resolve the whole crisis in FRY and the Balkans.
"Djukanovic and Petritsch also exchanged opinions regarding the current situation in Montenegro and FRY and agreed that there is no alternative to a political solution of the Kosovo crisis and that additional efforts should be made to renew negotiations, which is a precondition for the cessation of hostilities and the return of peace," says the official statement from President Djukanovic's office.
Yesterday, Petritsch and Boneman also talked to Montenegrin Prime Minister Filip Vijanovic in Podgorica.
Ambassador Petritsch emphasized that the visit is another proof of the support EU offers to the democratic authorities in Montenegro and added that with that in mind, the EU had already earmarked significant amounts of humanitarian and economic aid.
The Prime Minister pointed out the problems the government was facing in connection with social and economic problems and the efforts made to receive the large number of refugees currently in Montenegro.
Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Dragisa Burzan and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Branko Perovic also participated in the talks.
