Podgorica - "The spiral of violence in Kosovo is accelerating," warned president of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic, late last night in a conversation with foreign journalists based in Podgorica.

According to Djukanovic, if the application of force continues, the Albanians and members of other ethnic groups will have nowhere go return once the fighting stops.

"It is necessary to immediately stop NATO attacks and renew negotiations. Because, no one, absolutely no one, not even the confirmed political opponents of Slobodan Milosevic understands the attitude of the International Community towards him. It is unimportant whether Milosevic, in Saddam-like manner, will wait out this NATO offensive, or whether everyone on the face of the Earth will understand that he had been militarily defeated, or whether he and someone else will declare a moral victory. All of this is irresponsible and innocent people are dying in this hell," said Djukanovic.

He emphasized that if the regional and world peace depend "on a phone call of a single man", that can only be an indication of the powerlessness of the diplomacy and policy of great world powers.

According to Djukanovic, Montenegro had been badly hit, not only by NATO missiles, "but also by the cruel suffering of Serbia, its people, and all innocent people dying in Kosovo". Djukanovic stressed that the primary goal for Montenegro was to preserve internal peace.

"Unfortunately, even at this time, there are those who are striving to cause internal conflict in Montenegro. Of course, the instigators are hidden in their safe Belgrade shelters," said Djukanovic, adding that "here in Montenegro, we have enough knowledge and courage and determination to prevent internal conflict". Djukanovic called on all citizens of Montenegro to persevere in the respect for the letter and spirit of the Resolution of the Montenegrin Parliament, which he labeled "the Salvation Charter".
