Slobodna Dalmacija

Slobodna Dalmacija is a daily newspaper published in Split in Dalmacija. In the late eighties, similarly to other publications in the rapidly liberalizing former Yugoslavia, this former Communist publication attained a high degree of openess and even spawned a satirical supplement that will one day turn into Feral Tribune. However, early in the HDZ rule, the newspaper was fraudulently handed over to late president Tudjman's favorite "tycoon", Miroslav Kutle. Kutle proceeded to loot the property of the paper and its editorial policy took a sharp turn toward the "patriotic" journalism. In late 1999, when Kutle's "empire" finally toppled in a series of bankruptcies, Slobodna Dalmacija, again became the property of the Croatian state. Following the dramatic changes after the electoral defeat of the HDZ in January 3 2000 elections, and the death of Franjo Tudman, Slobodna Dalmacija remains one of the few remaining flagships of "patriotic" journalism. The paper is available on-line as of June 1999. The site also offers selected articles from the sister publication, Slobodna BiH (stopped publishing in January 2000), and the weekly Nedeljna Dalmacija [Weekly Dalmatia].
