The rally started at 7p.m. and went on for somewhat longer than two hours. There were no serious incidents, but tear gas and bottles were thrown and there was scuffling between security guards belonging to different parties. As the press agency BETA reported, this prompted the president of the Civic Alliance of Serbia, Goran Svilanovic, to leave the gathering.
Besides already announced speakers and those who canceled at the last moment, when Spasoje Krunic (SPO) addressed the participants he was greeted with shouts: "We want Vuk [Draskovic]".
Then, Vuk Draskovic addressed the crowd, while his speech was followed with loud disapproval by the followers of Zoran Djindjic.
Draskovic expressed support for early elections and against the changes in the streets: "The changes in Serbia will not come from revenge". Members of the Democratic Party greeted these words with whistles.
There were even clashes between the bodyguards of Vuk Draskovic and Zoran Djindjic.
Last night's rally was described by many news agencies and TV stations from NATO member countries as successful. They claimed that as many as 100,000 or 150,000 people were present. That only indicates that the goal was to in advance preserve credibility of this rally into which a lot of money had been invested.
