Is This Your Peace, Gentlemen And Excellencies?

by Branko GEROSKI

Dnevnik, Skopje, Macedonia, August 22, 2001

With the destruction of a part of the monastery in the Tetovo village of Lesok, with the explosion in the center of the Macedonian Christian tradition and culture in the Polog valley, with that treacherous act done by godless persons, for whom the western diplomats and media have persistently built the image of fighters for human rights and peacemakers, starts the campaign for the promotion of the Ohrid peace agreement, in which creative and generous Americans will invest the fantastic sum of $250,000 (two hundred fifty thousand dollars).

Honestly, after all the injustice and hypocrisy experienced in the last few months from the representatives of the so-called international community, we could not expect anything better. Now we know what sort of "peace" awaits us in the future. I would not be surprised if one of those propagandists, who in his homeland cannot find nor will ever find a heap older than two hundred years, will soon try to convince me that his dirty money will be able to make up for the tragedy caused by the attack on an eight centuries old monument. I would not be surprised if the motto of his campaign is "We shall build even prettier and older Lesok Monstery".

So, my dear readers, such asses are supposed to now help us build peace in our homeland. Give me a break!

Similar types, both from abroad and Macedonia, supposedly concerned about the endangered peace process, have recently been asking me why Dnevnik has "changed its editorial policy" and why we now allegedly advocate war instead of peace. Dear readers, do not fall for such stories. Do not allow such imbeciles to convince you that you are wrong, that you hate someone, that you've overnight become militaristic only because you, as well as us, are disturbed by what you can see around yourself, if you share our disappointment and our anger with the attempts to impose ignominious defeat instead of honorable and fruitful peace.

Both you and I are the same. We haven't changed and definitively are not confused. And we definitely haven't "changed our policy". True, some things are not the same. For example the appearance of our favorite Lesok monastery is different - a part of it is no more. For example, the fates of seventy Macedonian families that have lost their fathers and sons are different. Yes, there are a lot of changes, but for the worse.

We, you and us, respected readers, do not advocate war. We never did that. It is obvious who wants war. It is obvious who started first. It is even obvious who is today violating the ceasefire and killing the fragile peace. We are the same as before - we were and still want peace, terrorists wanted and still want war. Only foreigners changed their policy. For them Ali Ahmeti used to be a bandit, and not he is mister nice guy. They do not care anymore who started the war. They forgot who killed, raped, burned. They do not want to admit that Macedonians are victims in this war. Their cameras do not "catch" expelled Macedonians and burnt monasteries and churches. They have no honor. They do not want peace. They demand from us capitulation and an ignominious defeat. If we allow murderers to finish us off, they would be happy and would not even blink.

A foreigner asked me: come on, why would the West do all that? Let me give him a public reply: because you are afraid that the monster you created, the Albanian paramilitary formations, will turn against you! That is why. Tomorrow, your soldiers, NATO soldiers, will come to Macedonia afraid that hey may die like chicken from bullets you supplied to your proteges. That is what you're afraid of. You are afraid because you would have to explain to your public why your soldiers in Macedonia are being killed by your friends to whom you gave everything - political support, training, weapons, money, and now even glory and the image of peacemakers.

But this time, unfortunately, you won't be able to accuse "ethnic Macedonians Slavs". Your generals are parading up and down Macedonia in vain, supposedly to establish whether we hate them too much. You fret for no reason about our supposedly anti-NATO reception of your soldiers, as if they are coming to vacation in Ohrid, so that we are supposed to greet them with a red carpet and bread and salt [traditional sign of welcome in the Balkans]. You cannot hide that you are afraid of "your own", of those who greeted you like "brothers" in Sipkovica, with a sign celebrating victory of injustice and your shame.

And your protégés, the way they were created by God - violent, unscrupulous, godless and berserk - are discrediting your "peacemaking efforts" at every step and unmasking your pitiful comedies. Your "hero" Ali Ahmeti today hangs your national flags next to his two-headed eagle, and tomorrow under those very same flags he will shoot at Macedonian history, tradition and culture, and we all know that and will not forget who shares responsibility for the destruction of Lesok monastery - the countries and organizations whose flags we all could see at the press conference in Sipkovica.

Therefore, we Macedonians, who neither had nor now have reasons to talk with bandits like Ahmeti, will talk about the shooting at Lasok Monastery, about shooting at our culture and tradition, about shooting at peace, with his bosses, those who guarantee for him, who swear in him, and clean his shoes every day. I call on you, respected readers, to address them, to drop them a line, to ask them. To the following gentlemen and excellences: NATO secretary general George Robertson, EU special representatives Javier Solana, American ambassador Mike Einik, the new British ambassador whose name we shall soon learn, Carlo Ungaro of the OSCE, Hansjorg Eiff of NATO, Peter Feith also of NATO, and all other self-declared "peacemakers". Go ahead, ask then for example, like this:

Do you understand, gentlemen and excellences, the significance of our sacred sites for us, Macedonians? Do you even understand the meaning of the expression "sacred site"? Do you have any sacred sites? Do you have any concept of spirituality and sacred? You had a chance to travel through Macedonia (and this country, if you didn't know, is larger than Sipkovica) and to realize that you are on Biblical soil, on which you must walk with respect and awe, since your every step is watched by pebbles of history?

And how do you intend, gentlemen and excellences, to create peace in this country if your mister nice guy is shooting at our history, culture and spirituality? Is this the peace you promote? You like this sort of Macedonia, with destroyed monasteries, with murdered culture, with robbed tradition? Does the path to improved human rights lead over destroyed monasteries? Are you aware that you're making a deal with devil and that you are slowly but surely losing your credibility in this country?

Are you today at least a bit ashamed, gentlemen and excellences?
