UNITED TERRORISTS
by Dubravko HORVATIC
Hrvatsko Slovo, Zagreb, Croatia, April 17, 1998
An unprecedented crime took place in the former "spa on the Danube" on April
14, 1998, late at night, when the few remaining inhabitants of Vukovar, the
town that is almost no more, had already felled asleep: bandits broke in to
the Eltz family grave, in the crypt of the destroyed, half demolished church
of St. Filip and Jakov. However, their goal was not to loot but without
doubt, to desecrate a Catholic, Croat sacred place. This can be discerned
from the traces they left behind them, the traces they did not even try to
hide. Namely, besides putting a scull from the grave they had broken into
on a flimsy recently put-together altar, they wrote "Death to the Pope and
Tudman" on the altar, in addition to a whole series of disgusting
statements. To make sure that everyone knows who did that, they left their
small signature: those infamous four Cyrillic letters S. These letters do
not mean, as is frequently publicly interpreted, "Only Unity Saves Serbs"
[samo sloga Srbe spasava], but their true meaning is "Only Serbs Everyone
Everywhere" [samo Srbi, svi, svugda]. Unfortunately, we have already
witnessed a series of terrorist acts whose goal is to undermine the
foundations of the Croat State. Recently a bomb was thrown on a gasoline
pump in Dalj. A whole series of attacks on Croats, who have returned to
their homes, or only next to them, has been recorded. Furthermore, in the
Plitvice region a Serb returnee killed his Croat neighbor. Perhaps Vietnam
veterans [American ambassador William Montgomery] like that sort of stuff,
since they demand from the Croat state (what gives them the right to do
that?) that all Serb rebels and runaways with unclear conscience be allowed
to return, while they are at the same time bothered when Croats, in their
own front yard, in front of their own house (in which they cannot enter
because Serbs live in somebody else's nest) roast a lamb or cook a meal in a
cauldron. It is very clear that we are too tame for the taste of
"democrats" who want to oversee the whole world and behave in every
independent state like a sheriff in a saloon, waving a gun and threatening
those who disobey. Perhaps here they are impressed only by exceptions,
asocial types who, under influence of drugs or to obtain drugs, kill
innocent cab drivers and postmen? Finally, aren't drugs, which are
spreading through Croatian cities like medieval plague, only one of the
means used by the international terrorists, whose goal is to at all cost
prevent every independent, sovereign action on the world scene, and with the
same goal destabilize every remotely independent state, including the
Republic of Croatia? However, Croatia can and must resist that: if in no
other way, then with morality and culture, essentially identical categories,
obviously lacking in those who assault us.
