The assailants, of course, dispersed before the police arrived. M.K. decided not to testify that day. However, journalists took care to add to the fear he carries from Lora. First, they revealed his name, the Croatian TV repeated it several times at prime time; then with unfathomable cynicism, the newspapers referred to him as a "protected witness" and one guesses that it only remains that one of the local journalists in his investigative zeal publish the address of the unfortunate man and the "protected witness" would most likely end up the way his torturers from Lora want him - dead.
"Unidentified culprits" have been for days knocking on doors of the people who have already testified to the investigative magistrate about Lora and are treating them to the already customary repertoire of curses and threats; Mladen Bajic, county state prosecutor, in charge of the Lora case, confirmed for us that he has received several death threats so far; Tonci Majic, president of the Dalmatian Committee for Human Rights, the organization that should be credited for forcing the authorities to initiate an investigation in this case, has recorded several colorful phone death threats; Pero Jurisin, a journalist from Split and author of a series of articles about maltreatment in Lora has received two threatening letters; after publishing the most recent articles about Lora Feral Tribune has received several incoherent threatening messages such as "you miss brotherhood and unity [and former Yugoslavia], but you can live without that; you cannot live without a head"; journalists who waited to see the taking into custody of the war crimes suspects were threatened by a group of bullies who introduced themselves as Ustashe [Croat fascists from WWII]; the policemen who, as usual, arrived somewhat later, shook hands with the Ustashe and had a friendly chat with them...
How can it be that the investigative magistrate does not know that after everything he's been through M.K. is scared to death so that he leaves him to wait in the hallway before testifying? How can it be that the investigative magistrate does not know that a group of "knights" is making rounds in the court building, making threats and intimidating witnesses and that, alone and unprotected, M.K. is an ideal pray for them in front of magistrate's door? How can it be that the police does not know who makes threats and intimidates even though that is done literally in front of their nose - the court house is only a few meters away from the central Split police station? How is it possible that no one knows how the "knights" obtained exact time when witnesses are supposed to give statements to the investigative magistrate and their addresses? Who are the people who persistently and consistently know nothing?
Their name is the product of the system, Tudman's system, which incited and tolerated crime, and Racan's system, which would prefer to ignore the criminals. More or less everything has been said about Tudman; about Racan, it is sufficient to mention that at the time of increasing terror against witnesses of torture in Lora he courageously and indomitably called a meeting of the government at which he yet again spoke out against terror; naturally, the target of courageous Racan's government was again Osama bin Laden.
