Archeologists and investigators from a Netherlands city called The Hague try to find their bones, so that they could prove that our cowboys shouldn't have killed the Indians. But, it is not quite sure that those "archeologists" from this unfriendly country didn't bring some bones in their bags, and planted them in our pits, so that they could unjustly accuse our cowboys. This is at least what Anto Djapic [head of the extreme right Party of Croatian Rights, HSP] claims; Djapic seems to have read Krleza's description of the Croats as a "neurotic people who always scream, gossip about other people, and blame the Serbs for everything". Djapic goes around these days with the "only" creators of the cowboy country, and delivers speeches in which he calls Mesic and Racan Stevan and Jovan [Serb names], since these names are in our people a worse insult than calling someone a piece of shit.
And while our cowboys play a "popular uprising", following the example of their former enemies, the other, somewhat more sophisticated part, is completely dedicated to spying games that are not so "transparent". Everything is misterious and important, and, of course, in the "interest of Croatia". The recently appointed head of HIS, Ozren Zunec, just ran off the pitch, because they wouldn't let him set up his team. The head of UNS, Tomislav Karamarko, took over his part of the pitch, and he alone will appoint the new boss of this, for the "neurotic nation", extremely important institution. Since this country has enough spy cadres, who established their reputations on demanding and, in terms of national security, necessary work of eavesdropping and spying on the problematic citizens, Karamarko might easily replace the "inexperienced" Zunec with "reliable" cadres, such as Jarnjak, or even better, Smiljan Reljic.
They anyhow haven't resigned, moreover, the latter was successfully returned to Tudjman's spy nest by the former one, who was convinced that the new Croatian president would be Mate Granic, so that the continuity of the "protection of the state" by eavesdropping and spying would not be terminated. But, to hell, why replace the "professionals" at all, when their involvement in eavesdropping and spying on the independent journalists and opposition leaders during the Zagreb crisis cannot be proved?
"What about the objective responsibility which comes together with their status?"
"It is possible, but, unfortunately, we haven't found the original transcript of the secretly recorded conversations during the "operation Zagreb" published in your newspaper. According to the way the transcript was done, we can only say that it is authentic."
"Can the direct executors of the scandal bear the responsibility?"
"Not according to the existing law. There are no written traces, since the 'daddy' usually gave an oral order, which was then transferred from the top down to the ordinary operatives."
"Has the State Attorney ordered an investigation into this case?"
"No, we in the police warned him about the documents published in Feral Tribune, but after reading them, he said that the statute of limitations was 'relatively' in force. More precisely, according to the article 131 of the Criminal law, the penalty for illegal eavesdropping is up to three years in prison, which is exactly the same as the statute of limitations."
To tell the truth, you can never be sure with spies, but it seems to me that this longtime member of secret services and a high police official who wished to remain anonymous, does not approve of the behavior of the State Attorney, who, instead of starting a complete investigation into all criminal actions of Tudjman's secret services, prefers the relativity theory of good old Albert. He confirmed this when he answered the question whether the State Attorney had ordered an investigation about Nevenka Tudjman, two months after Feral published the compromising document about the illegal business of this lady and a person named Knezevic.
"No, the State Attorney hasn't ordered an investigation."
"So, you too have an excuse for not doing anything?"
"No, we did order the criminal police to start an investigation. But I repeat, the problem is not the police, the problem is the judiciary that doesn't do anything, except taking care of their salaries. To tell the truth, the same people are still in the 'services', and there are no written orders to listen or spy on, because the services were established on the Bolshevik model. 'Pops' would order that someone be 'processed' and everything else was done orally. Your newspaper was constantly 'worked on' based on the same kind of order."
"Why aren't we allowed to see our files?"
"Because the law doesn't allow it."
"Than the law obliges you to start legal proceedings against Hrvoje Sarinic who gave parts of our files to certain journalists?"
"Good idea, but Sarinic does not have your files, only transcripts that he picked up in the Presidential office, where all sound recordings were stored."
All in all, it seems that nothing can be done about any of the affairs in which Tudjman's spies were involved. Because, the honorable Berislav Zivkovic, the State Attorney appointed by HDZ, advocates the philosophy of relativity in some cases, and in some other cases he takes into consideration exclusively "authentic" sound recordings. Like in the case of the "conversation" between Pasalic and Tudjman about the sale of Vecernji list, the recording of which, just like the "original" documents about the "operation Zagreb" published in Feral, cannot be found in any of the intelligence headquarters.
Everything implies that Pasalic can rest peacefully. And Jarnjak. And Reljic. And Penic can continue napping in his parliamentary bench.
It would all be idyllic, just like in a spy movie, if it weren't for the damned journalists, who always scribble something, leak "top secret documents", so that the Government and the police are right when they accuse them of spoiling their business.
There is a lady from the Government, an expert of a wide range - from economy to the media - who publicly told an "anecdote" how "no one can really tell who delivers secret documents to whom - the secret services to the independent media, or vice versa". After all, the person from SZUP that I spoke to also told me that one of the options they considered after Feral published the transcript of the conversations of the opposition members, was that Ivic Pasalic gave us the documents, so that he could discredit the opposition leaders! So, this is how we came down, from the cooperation with various "foreign" services, to the domestic cooperation with Pasalic.
That is why we advise Ms. Vice-president of the Government to order further eavesdropping and spying on Feral's journalists to finally find out who delivers "secret" documents that "disturb the public" to whom. The key players responsible for the collapse of the country have no reason to worry. Because of the statute of limitations for everything that happened, is advocated so passionately by this prominent party representative of the new Government.
