Denunciation

by Bogdan Tirnanic

Dnevni Telegraf, Belgrade, FR Yugoslavia, October 13, 1998

Imagine this news: "Vice-president of the Serbian government denounced himself because of media abuse under the guise of freedom!" If you think that something like that is impossible, you are wrong. Because it has just happened.

The Serbian Ministry of Information informs the public that, in a conversation with the delegation of entrepreneurs and politicians from Surdulica (wow!)[provincial town in southern Serbia], vice-president of the government Dragan Tomic "especially emphasized" that "it cannot be permitted that under the guise of freedom of the media and its misuse[sic] that the media spread propaganda in our country... on behalf of capitalists who had founded these media, which is best confirmed by their frequent one sided reporting about events".

Hardly anything can be added to this self-portrait. Namely, Dragan Tomic, as the director of the business concern "NH Simo Pogarcevic" (elsewhere in the article Simpo), publishes the magazine "Kuca stil" ["Interior Design"], which means that the biggest Serbian capitalist is the publisher of this medium and that the medium serves the capitalist's interests with frequently one-sided reporting. The editorial policy of "Kuca stil" is based on the fact that Serbs refurbish their homes. Could there be a bigger lie than that all Serbs have apartments! It is also characteristic that "Kuca Stil" as well as Nasa Borba, Blic, Dnevni Telegraf, Glas, and Danas is edited by a foreign national.

Therefore, there is no doubt that "Kuca Stil", "under the guise of freedom of the media and its misuse" engages in propaganda, which is confirmed by its often one-sided reporting about the events in our country. Since it is not my goal to leave this claim as an empty accusation which "spreads fear and panic", we'll browse through the pages of the 50th issue of the magazine "Kuca Stil". On the first few pages, the magazine published an article under the title "Oasis on the Roof" which promotes illegal construction, inflicts damage to the security system and, to boot, promotes nostalgia for the past communist times: "Do you remember merry sixties? With a bit of money, a lot of spirit, energy, youthful flair and belief in better times in the future."

Immediately after this article, serving the interests of capitalists and undermining the integrity and sovereignty of our country, "Kuca Stil " publishes an advertisement with the pro-government motto "relax!" which promotes "American closets" (treason, treason!) from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. A portrait of the designer Hilton McConnic follows (pay attention to the title "Master of Illusion!"); it is said that "he never learnt to read" because he "has a philosophical understanding of things". Glasses designed by McConnic are recommended to the readers, at the price of $10 a piece, which at this time can only spread fear and panic: does "Kuca Stil" imply that we will soon, once we are occupied, use American currency?! In the same issue we can find a portrait of Voja Stanic, a well known Montenegrin separatist, zealous supporter of the impostor Milo Dukanovic. The magazine also writes about a well known American drunkard Eugene O'Neil, and poisons our patriotic youth. What can one say about the article entitled "House in Air"? Or about the column "Ideas" which suggests "Nook Under the Staircase" for protection in case of bombardment?! Whenever possible, without any indication that it is a paid advertisement, "Kuca Stil" promotes water "Rosa", also produced by concern Simpo, by which it commits the crime of one-sided reporting about the events in (our) country where the majority of population prefers "Knjaz Milos" water brand. All that, of course, under the guise of the freedom of the media and its misuse!
