Political Commissar Walker

by Milan Lazarevic

Borba, Belgrade, FR Yugoslavia, January 11, 1999

We have expected from Mr Walker to be in Kosmet what he had been appointed for - a head of the international verification mission which should help us stop the terrorist rampage of the Albanian separatists and establish a stable situation. We have accepted this mission counting on the good will of the so-called international community to contribute to peace for all the citizens in Kosmet and turn this part of the Balkans and Europe into a factor of peace and stability. We have not expected nor can we accept that these and such "missionaries" be our tutors and arbitrators, let alone political commissars.

The head of the verification mission Mr Walker is attempting these days to defend the setting up of some sort of media by Kosmet terrorists. The explanation is nothing less than alleged lack of free media and pressure on so-called independent media. Mr Walker has forgotten again that those are the terrorists under the auspices of the Islamic fundamentalism and that in this case, he is defending the freedom and independence or the most vicious form of modern terrorism.

In this way, Mr Walker has completely changed the role of his mission, and instead of helping us stop the terrorism, he has converted himself, like Adem Demaci, into a political commissar of the bandits who are spreading death among innocent citizens of Kosmet.

Should we remind the public how many times and in what manner the verification mission reacted when Kosmet terrorists were carrying out their actions? How much time was necessary for Walker to accept to talk with the relatives of the missing and captured [Serb] citizens? Has the verification mission had any success in stopping terrorism and reducing tension in Kosmet?

The facts assure us that Mr Walker and his mission are increasingly serving as a cover for undisturbed activities of the terrorists. In addition to providing them with logistic support, Mr Walker is trying to become their political tutor. This gentleman wants to help them get their own media so as to be more accurately informed about their own crimes, and also to inform the world about their experience in fighting against the basic human right - the right to live.

Can Mr Walker realize at all that with these bestialities, he will enter the history as a sad victim of his own and someone else's illusions?
