Kosovska Mitrovica - On Thursday the situation in Kosovska Mitrovica was the most critical since the arrival of KFOR. At least 33 Serbs and 15 French soldiers were injured during an attempt of the Albanians to enter by force the northern, Serbian part of the city. Referring to Albanian sources AP reports killing of one Albanian and injury of the several of them.

During the day, the terrorists opened fire on Serbs on several occasions in Brdo, one of the residential quarters. The French soldiers returned fire and killed at least three and wounded several terrorists.

At 7p.m. a large group of Albanians tried to enter by force the northern, Serbian part of Mitrovica. KFOR prevented them from doing so by using barbed wire and more than 30 armored vehicles. The Albanians then forded the Ibar river and entered the northern part of the city. However, about 100 soldiers from the French contingent waited for them in armored transport vehicles and stopped them on the northern bank of the river.

Several terrorists threw bombs on Serbs over the French soldiers. The Serbs were only 30 meters away. At the same time the terrorists opened fire on the Serbs from two directions. In these attacks 33 Serbs and 15 French soldiers were injured. Ilija Pavlovic and Miodrag Draskic were seroiusly injured and transported to Belgrade. Nenad Avdijenko(16) and Ivica Markovic(28) are in the hospital in Mitrovica. Ljiljana Bozovic(23) and Svetomir Popovic(40) are recovering at the orthopedic department.

AFP reported that 9 French gendarmes and six soldiers were injured, all of them lightly.

The Albanian Enver Munipi shot from a gun at a group of Serbian youths near the building of the Technical school in the Serbian part of the city. The French soldiers arrested Munipi.

Immediately before Albanian attack, the electric current supply, as well as telephone connections, were cut to the northern part of Mitrovica. The electricity was restored around midnight, while the phone links were reestablished the following morning.

Yesterday, the situation in the city was still tense, since about hundred Albanians gathered around noon on the southern side of the bridge. Barbed wire is still spread over the bridge, while about 30 armored vehicles and 50 French soldiers are standing on the bridge. In protest against the incidents in Kosovska Mitrovica, the villagers from Doljane blocked yesterday Danish KFOR soldiers in the barracks in that village. Somewhat later, a protest rally was also held in Zubin Potok.
