Despite the pressure exerted by majority ethnic Albanians in Kosmet [short for Kosovo and Metohija], Gorani again refused this year to study following the Albanian instruction plan. Consequently, thirty pupils who are supposed to start attending high school in Dragas this year still haven't started their classes. They were ejected from classrooms of their multi-ethnic school (it is also attended by ethnic Albanians) on the first day of school, with books in Serbian language in their hands. They were thrown out of school by an ethnic Albanian teacher.
"We have been studying in Serbian since the old Yugoslav kingdom, based on the Serbian instruction plan. Serbian language and Serbian instruction plan haven't been imposed on us. Gorani have successfully educated their children in Serbian. Our community has numerous physicians, engineers... All of them studied in Serbian and based on the Serbian plan," says for Blic a Gorani from Dragas who requested to remain anonymous.
The same problem occurred last year in Dragas. Pupils and their parents demanded to study based on the Serbian plan and persisted with their demands. However, their school year started only in June, so that they had to cover the whole year of material over three summer months. But they studied and learnt in Serbian. The only difference is that last year they had support of the Serbian Education Ministry. This year a Gorani representative still hasn't found a collocutor in the Education Ministry.
